How Long Do Weighted Blankets Last?

Weighted blankets can be a great way to soothe your mind, relax your body and sleep better. These blankets are made from cotton, polyester, or fleece, and will wear out given time. But how long is that? And is there an expiry date for your weighted blanket?

In this article, I will address these concerns and tell you what you need to know about the life expectancy of a weighted blanket and ways to extend it.

How Long Do Weighted Blankets Last?

A weighted blanket will only last as long as its materials and how well it is taken care of (more on that later). It can last anywhere between 3 to 10 years; however, the Sleep Foundation suggests replacing your weighted blanket every 5 years.

Do Weighted Blankets Expire?

Different types of weighted blankets are made with different materials. Some are made from woven fabrics, and others are made from fleece. The life expectancy of these blankets varies depending on the durability of the material they are made of. For example, a durable weighted blanket like Baloo weighted blanket can last longer than other inexpensive weighted blankets. However, there is no need to worry about the blanket expiring if it is still in good condition.

When To Replace Your Weighted Blanket?

If you keep your blanket for more than 3-5 years, you will likely need to replace it as the blanket’s weight decreases, the fabric starts to break down, and the beads start to leak due to constant use, making it less effective. Also, look for these signs to know if your weighted blanket needs to be replaced.

  • Your blanket is lumpy, and the weight distribution is off.
  • Your blanket smells, which won’t go away with washing.
  • You see visible signs such as rips, tears, and holes.
  • The blanket doesn’t feel as heavy.

What Causes Weighted Blankets to Wear Out?

Weighted blankets wear out over time through repeated use, constant washing, not washing when dirty, or prolonged exposure to sunlight

Also, weighted blankets can become soiled or stained with sweat or other liquids, which can cause them to lose their effectiveness. Improper storage and folding can also cause damage to your weighted blanket.

How to Make Your Weighted Blanket Last Longer?

The average lifespan of a weighted blanket is approximately five years. After that, they will start to wear out. Nevertheless, there are some things you can do to prolong the life of your blanket.

1. Use Duvet Cover for Your Weighted Blanket

One of the most important things you can do for your weighted blanket is to use a duvet cover. This will help prevent the blanket from losing its effectiveness as the duvet cover saves the blanket from daily wear and tear.

Also, a cover will ensure that your blanket stays clean, which is especially important if you have children or pets around the house.

Since a weighted blanket is heavy, it is not easy to wash it at home. You may need to go to a commercial laundry near you to wash. Instead, you can wash your duvet cover and put it back over the weighted blanket. You will also save your blanket from possible damage during washing.

Duvet covers are breathable and help prevent UV rays from damaging your blanket. I personally use the Baloo linen duvet cover, it is luxurious and at the same time protects my weighted blanket from wear and tears. I have also reviewed it for you guys, check it out here.

2. Properly Store Your Weighted Blanket When Not in Use

To make your weighted blanket last longer, you should store it properly. This will help protect it from dust and other contaminants that could be harmful.

You can store your weighted blanket in vacuum-sealed bags, chests, baskets, and lidded boxes like these. Under-bed storage containers or bags are ideal if you need to keep several items but don’t have much room.

It would help if you stored your weighted blanket in a dry place where the temperature won’t fluctuate too much.

An airtight container is recommended in such situations because the humid air can cause mildew to grow on your blanket.

For the same reason, ensure the blanket is not damp/wet. Further, be sure to air out your weighted blanket after a few days of use and before putting it away for a while.

3. Follow the Washing Instructions Provided in The Manual

If you want your weighted blanket to last longer, always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. These instructions will tell you how often to wash your blanket and what detergent to use.

Washing your weighted blanket removes dirt and dust particles that can get stuck in the fibers. It also helps release any chemicals that might have gotten into the blanket from its packaging.

Washing your weighted blanket will also help keep it clean. You can feel safe knowing that you’re not carrying any harmful bacteria or allergens into your bedroom. This will help prevent mold and mildew growth in the future.

As a general rule of thumb, you do not want to use fabric softeners, harsh detergents, and boiling hot water to wash your weighted blanket.

Final Verdict

A weighted blanket does not expire as long as it is in good shape and can still be used. However, like every other product weighted blankets also need to be replaced after some time. This time may vary from 3 to 10 years based on the quality of your weighted blanket. However, you should replace your weighted blanket every 5 years to reap the best benefits of deep pressure therapy for better sleep.
